Criminal Sentencing: White, Black, and Mental
[ send
me this paper ] (8 pp). What we will be looking at in this
discussion are basically two issues, that have somehow become enmeshed:
According to Davis (1998), more than 70 percent, of the imprisoned
population, are people of color. It is rarely acknowledged, that the
fastest growing group of prisoners are black women, and that Native
American prisoners are the largest group per capita. Approximately five
million people - including those on probation and parole -- are directly
under the surveillance of the criminal justice system. And according to
Ditton (1999) sixteen percent of those incarcerated in state systems are
mentally ill. One of the questions that then arises from this data is, are
the white mentally ill sentenced to incarceration at a different ratio
than people of color? Bibliography lists 8 sources. Filename: BBblkcrR.doc

Discrimination and "Social Democracy" in
Brazil [ send
me this paper ] (5 pp) Attempting change is always difficult; and
of course some clever soul said, the most difficult thing to change is
ones ideas or belief system. That has certainly been true of the concept
of "social democracy" in Brazil. Emilia Viotti da Costa examines that
thought in an article entitled, "The Myth of Racial Democracy in Brazil: A
Problem of Social Mythology." Filename:

Discrimination and Liability: An Investigation
into the Backlash of Civil Rights Legislation [ send
me this paper ] A 6 page contention that the laws that were put in
place immediately after the Civil War to guarantee the rights of freed
slaves, and those which have been in place since to prevent
discrimination, have had a tremendous societal impact. While these laws
were justified by the circumstances of the time period in which they were
enacted, they now translate into the liability crisis which our
businesses, governments, and organizations are facing today when they try
to hire or replace employees based on qualifications rather than racial,
ethnic, or gender identity. Bibliography lists 2 sources. Filename: PPcivRts.rtf
